Although his agent said that Matias Soulé would be ‘open’ to playing for Italy, it is reported the Roma star’s priority remains waiting for Argentina.

The comments from representative Martin Guastadisegno to LaRoma24.it yesterday caused shockwaves, as he made it clear that the forward was ready and eager to switch his allegiance to the Azzurri.

“His dream is to play in a World Cup. He is an Italo-Argentine, I don’t know what might happen if the Argentina situation doesn’t change.

“It’s all up in the air at the moment, what I can say is that legally he has the option to play for Italy and he is available.”

Why Italy won’t call Soulé yet

It is certainly true that Soulé does have dual citizenship due to Italian ancestry and could be called up by the Nazionale.

The 22-year-old has represented Argentina at various youth levels, but is yet to make his senior debut, so would have no legal problems switching his nationality.

However, Sky Sport Italia, La Gazzetta dello Sport and more warn that although this is a possibility, the Roma star is in absolutely no hurry to abandon hope of Argentina giving him a chance.

His priority therefore remains waiting for an opportunity with La Seleccion, so if Italy were to call, he’d ask to be given more time before making a final decision.

Italy has a long history of using players from South America with Italian ancestry, the so-called ‘Oriundi.’
