DFB takes action! Bayern severely punished after pyrotechnics incident | OneFootball

FC Bayern has been hit with a hefty fine by the German Football Association (DFB) following the pyrotechnics incidents in the DFB Cup final against VfB Stuttgart. The Sports Court imposed a sanction of 260,000 euros on the record champions.

The DFB Sports Court’s ruling is dated July 22 and pertains to the incidents surrounding the Cup final on May 23, which Munich won 3–0 against VfB Stuttgart. The Stuttgart team was also fined the same amount of 260,000 euros.

According to the court’s reasoning, 30 pyrotechnic devices were set off as early as the first half. After halftime, the situation escalated further: Between the 51st and 55th minutes, another 235 pyrotechnic devices were set off, forcing the match to be suspended for about three minutes. Furthermore, the DFB recorded 39 additional flares or smoke bombs in the second half.

The cumulative nature of these incidents ultimately led to the severe penalty imposed on both clubs.

Bayern protested—the DFB partially upheld the appeal

FC Bayern had contested sole responsibility during the proceedings. The DFB’s statement reads: “FC Bayern München AG did not agree with this and argued that the club was not the organizer of the match and could not have influenced security matters.”

Furthermore, the Munich-based club argued that the DFB had been repeatedly warned in advance about the expected use of pyrotechnics and had received additional support. According to the club, the exceptionally high number of pyrotechnic devices set off was attributable to a “systemic failure of the admission controls for which the DFB was responsible” and should be taken into account as a mitigating factor.

The Sports Court accepted this objection, at least in part. Consequently, FC Bayern may use up to 86,700 euros of the fine for its own security or violence-prevention measures, provided the club submits appropriate documentation. In addition, the Munich-based club must bear the costs of the proceedings. The same rule applies to VfB Stuttgart as well.

Despite the partial acceptance of their arguments, the penalty remains a significant blow for the record champions. Thus, even months after their sporting success, the Cup final continues to have costly repercussions for FC Bayern.
