Clarence Seedorf criticised Jose Mourinho after comments linked to Vinicius Junior’s racism allegation during Benfica’s clash with Real Madrid.

Former Netherlands star Clarence Seedorf has strongly criticised Jose Mourinho following controversial remarks after Benfica’s match against Real Madrid in Champions League playoff round.

The game was overshadowed by incident involving Vinicius Junior who accused Gianluca Prestianni of making racist insult toward him after Madrid’s goal in the 50 minute.

Television images appeared to show Prestianni covering his mouth during the alleged exchange.

UEFA investigation underway

Following the incident, UEFA confirmed that it had opened official investigation. A special investigator was appointed to collect evidence and review match footage, referee reports and witness statements.

The case has attracted wide attention especially given Vinicius Junior’s history of speaking out against racism in football.

Seedorf: “This is a serious mistake”

After the match, Mourinho suggested that Vinicius celebration may have provoked Benfica supporters. Those comments drew sharp response from Seedorf.

Speaking to Tribuna, Seedorf said Mourinho made serious error by appearing to justify racist abuse. He explained that saying such incidents follow Vinicius wherever he goes sends the wrong message.

Seedorf stressed that this kind of reasoning suggests it is acceptable to provoke a player and then respond with racism which he strongly rejected.

He said racism should never be excused, regardless of the situation on the pitch.
