France international striker Kylian Mbappé could hardly have dreamt of a better start to his tenure as the new Les Bleus’ skipper. The free-scoring PSG forward dished out a clever assist for Antoine Griezmann’s 2nd-minute opener against The Netherlands. He then scored a brace to overtake Karim Benzema as the fifth-best goalscorer in the history of the French national team with 38 strikes.
The Didier Deschamps-led side eventually beat the Dutch 4-0 at the Stade de France to kick off their qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in style. The national team manager was pleased, but not that impressed, with the performance of France’s most feared forward. Get French Football News had given him a 8 out of 10 in our ratings. “The captain’s armband is not going to change him“, assessed Deschamps while speaking to La Chaîne L’Equipe. “He’s getting involved and is enjoying himself. He’s making efforts like his teammates do. He also changed positions occasionally, he knew how to compensate. He is the skipper but he already in played games like this. Like the rest of the squad, he had that desire to produce a very good game and, most of all, to win.“
Bar any injury until Monday, Mbappé should start at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium as France try to make it two wins in a row in their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Ireland.
