Diego Forlán appointed as Uruguay's new head coach | OneFootball

Diego Forlán has been appointed as Uruguay's new head coach, marking his return to the national team more than a decade after ending his international playing career.

The 47-year-old replaces Marcelo Bielsa, who stepped down following Uruguay's disappointing group-stage exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 

A legend of Uruguayan football, Forlán earned 112 caps and scored 36 goals for La Celeste, helping his country win the 2011 Copa América. He is perhaps best remembered for his outstanding performances at the 2010 World Cup, where he won the Golden Ball after inspiring Uruguay to the semi-finals.

The former Manchester United and Atlético de Madrid striker retired from international football in 2015 before bringing his playing career to an end three years later.

Forlán's managerial experience has so far been limited to spells with Uruguayan clubs Peñarol and Atenas, making this his biggest coaching challenge to date. He will take charge of Uruguay's senior side for international friendlies in September and October before preparations begin for the next competitive cycle.
