Rangers, yet to win a league game under Russell Martin, had issues both on and off the pitch ahead of hosting Celtic in the season’s first Old Firm clash. The gaffer made some bold calls this afternoon while choosing his starting XI, as he deployed Bojan Miovski straightaway up top despite joining from Girona less than 24 hours back. But the changes hardly improved their performance, as a lacklustre derby at Ibrox finished in a stalemate.
Jack Butland: 7
An effortless clean sheet for the Englishman, particularly after a 6-0 midweek humiliation against Club Brugge. Made a couple of routine saves, with the Hoops failing to create enough chances up top.
James Tavernier: 6.5
Made some trademark runs down the right, and also whipped in a few crosses into the box. But he lacked the chemistry with Djeidi Gassama, Mikey Moore or Oliver Antman, as the Gers’ summer recruits have not adjusted yet to Martin’s setup.
Nasser Djiga: 7
Looked resolute in deep defence, even though the Bhoys could not test his resolve with persistent attacking threats. Although a bit clumsy with his tackles, the Wolves loanee made some no-nonsense clearances, interceptions and challenges while engaging in duels.
John Souttar: 6.5
His header from Tavernier’s cross found the net before being ruled out by VAR. Struggled to win duels but made some key recoveries in one-on-one situations. His experience helped Rangers maintain the right balance in the heart of the backline.
Jayden Meghoma: 7
A little uncoordinated at times, the teenage left fullback showed his composure and concentration against Benjamin Nygren and James Forrest. Made some lively runs from the left but was confined to defensive duties to deal with Celtic’s counter-attacking threats.
Mohamed Diomande: 7.5
Worked hard deep down the midfield to regain possession with timely tackles, duels and recoveries. But the ball progression was missing from the Ivorian, considering how he dominated this fixture last season as an advanced playmaker.

Connor Barron: 7
Was handed a surprise start amid the uncertainties over Nicolas Raskin’s future. Injected pace and mobility in midfield, unlike Joe Rothwell, who has hardly made an impact since his Bosman move earlier this window. The latter, however, came on as a late substitute with 10 minutes remaining.
Djeidi Gassama: 6
Having featured from the left so far this campaign, Martin made a tactical tweak by changing his flank. But the Frenchman could not make much of a difference before making way for Findlay Curtis late in the match.
Mikey Moore: 6.5
Got the nod over Antman in the starting lineup. Had a couple of attempts off target, as the on-loan Spurs teenager had his moments in patches before being taken off for the Finnish wideman midway through the second half.
Thelo Aasgaard: 6.5
Tried to retain the ball and make space for the attackers in and around the attacking third. Drew a lot of fouls and was eventually forced to leave the pitch win an injury in favour of Nedim Bajrami.
Bojan Miovski: 6
Did not have many touches while spearheading the attack, but the former Aberdeen ace did well in terms of hold-up play, earning fouls and free kicks, and chasing loose balls. Was replaced by Cyriel Dessers with 20 minutes remaining.
Cyriel Dessers: 6
Rangers’ lack of creativity left him roaming high up the pitch since replacing Miovski.
Oliver Antman: 6
Failed with his dribbles and duels down the wide.
Nedim Bajrami: 6
Tried to carry the ball forward, but his final deliveries lacked perfection.
