Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s five-year wait for an England return is over after the Leeds United striker was called up for the March internationals against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley.

His inclusion was reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein shortly before the official announcement, and Thomas Tuchel has selected a 35-man squad for the camp.

Calvert-Lewin hit red-hot form in November and December, scoring in six successive Premier League matches. He has 10 goals in 27 top-flight appearances and his all-round play has been central to Leeds’ efforts to stay above the drop zone.

After leaving Everton last summer, the free agent signed for Leeds, who believed they could keep him fit, as they had with Manor Solomon and Junior Firpo. He has delivered 2,031 Premier League minutes and, crucially, greater reliability.

Tuchel said the camp is split into two groups to widen the picture and increase competition for places on the US trip, with a rested cohort joining from Friday and Saturday before a refreshed mix faces Japan.

In the centre-forward pecking order he will compete with first-choice Harry Kane and Tottenham Hotspur’s Dominic Solanke.
