Dominic Calvert-Lewin is enjoying a strong run of fitness and form after scoring his fifth Premier League goal of the season in Leeds United’s 1-1 draw at Brentford.
Jordan Henderson put Brentford ahead before the 28-year-old rose to head in Willy Gnonto’s cross in the 82nd minute. He created room against a physical defence, drifting back onside in time to meet the delivery. “I'm feeling good,” he told Sky Sports.
Since his Premier League debut against Newcastle United in August, the free agent striker has featured in every league game, either starting or coming off the bench. A minor hamstring issue at Brighton in November only reduced him to a substitute role at Nottingham Forest the following weekend.
“I think this is the fittest I’ve been in a long time and I’ve worked extremely hard to get in this position. When you get a certain narrative around you and you’re tarred with a certain brush, it’s quite hard to shake it. All of a sudden, the tide starts to turn and you start scoring goals, that’s the life of a centre-forward.”
“I think in football, as a player you have to try and control the controllables.”
Leeds accepted questions over his injury record when signing him, placed faith in their medical staff, and point to extended availability for Manor Solomon and Sam Byram in previous seasons as proof. Calvert-Lewin has stayed available through quick winter turnarounds with midweek football, even starting consecutive games.
