FC Bayern have completed a transfer for the future, signing a new central defender for the record champions
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the transfer of Virgilio Olaya has finally been finalized. The 17-year-old central defender from Ecuador will sign a four-and-a-half-year contract with the German record champions from February 2026
The Munich club has thus secured one of South America’s most exciting defensive talents at an early stage. Olaya, who currently plays for SD Aucas, is considered a great promise for the future in Ecuador and was recently on the radar of several international clubs. FC Bayern has now prevailed and apparently finalized the deal
The timing of the transfer is no coincidence. Due to FIFA regulations, Olaya cannot officially move to Europe until after his 18th birthday at the beginning of February 2026. That is exactly when the contract in Munich is due to start. Internally, the plan is clear: Olaya is to be built up over the long term without overtaxing him early on
That is why Bayern are already working on the next step, according to Romano. After signing him, Olaya will initially be loaned out to gain regular match practice at a high level. The background to this is the regulations according to which non-EU players are not allowed to play in the youth or regional leagues. An immediate place in Vincent Kompany’s professional squad would hardly make sporting sense for the young centre-back

Bayern had already been working on a creative solution for Olaya. A loan to a partner club from the Red & Gold network, which FC Bayern has built up together with Los Angeles FC, is conceivable. Stops in Europe, where young players are carefully introduced to professional soccer, are also considered an option
With this deal, FC Bayern has once again shown that it invests internationally at an early stage when it is convinced of a talent. Olaya is to mature in peace, gain experience and be introduced to the professional squad in the medium term. For Munich, it is a strategic transfer with foresight – and a further building block in its long-term squad planning.
