Gregor Kobel talked about the return of the Revierderby derby and Said El Mala’s potential move to Borussia Dortmund. The shot-stopper had a great World Cup, helping Switzerland reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1938.
“I think it’s cool that the game is back. It's part of the Bundesliga," Kobel said about Revierderby in an interview with Sky Sports. Schalke’s promotion to Germany’s top-flight brought back the “Mother of Derbies” for the 2026/27 season.
"We are extremely looking forward to it. Fans can also be happy. Such rivalries are fun for players and for the league. It's definitely a great game," the 28-year-old added as he’s entering his sixth season at Dortmund.
Kobel is one of the experienced players at Dortmund as the club continues to trust in youth, as shown by their transfer targets. "It's good that you have a certain mix between experience and hunger and also getting fresh players. The boys are very motivated. They all have great qualities," Kobel said about Dortmund’s squad for the new season.
He was also asked about the transfer saga of El Mala as Dortmund’s chances are growing more than ever with Köln demanding €55 million for the 19-year-old winger. "He has speed, has a good finish, and is good in one-on-one situations. These are all qualities that I very much like to have in the team," said Kobel of Germany U21 international.
