A spot at this summer’s finals is on the line

Axel Tuanzebe was the only goalscorer as DR Congo battled through extra-time to beat Jamaica and confirm their return to the World Cup for the first time since attending as Zaire in 1977. An extended qualifying campaign for Congo culminated in this match in Guadalajara, and after an encouraging AFCON campaign, the onus was on the Leopards to put the resurgent Reggae Boyz to the sword. A spirited match was not short on chances, though it was severely lacking in clinical edge.

Both sides struggled to make the most of their various chances, with Jamaica goalkeeper Andre Blake producing an imperious performance between the sticks, but he was eventually confounded in the first-half of extra-time as Tuanzebe arrived at the back post to tap a corner home. That one-goal lead proved insurmountable for Jamaica, who pressed hard for an equaliser but could not find one and will now wait at least another four years to play at the World Cup.

Congo will join Group K, alongside Uzbekistan and Colombia, and will face Portugal in Houston to open their World Cup campaign this June. Follow the action from Guadalajara LIVE below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, complete with expert insight and analysis.
