Duje Caleta-Car has left Olympique Lyonnais on 1 September, the final day of the Ligue 1 window, clearing the way for a move to Sassuolo in Serie A.

The club said in a statement on Tuesday morning that an amicable agreement had been reached to end a deal that was due to run until 30 June 2027.

The 29-year-old Croatia international made 57 appearances for Lyon and spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad.

His salary, shaped by previous spells at Marseille and Premier League side Southampton, was among the highest in the squad. He arrived on loan from Southampton in 2023, then signed permanently in summer 2024.

In Serie A he will link up with Nemanja Matic.

Lyon did not receive a fee for his departure, despite initial suggestions of a transfer worth around €2m. In mutual terminations it is often the case that a club pays a few months of salary for the player to forgo the remainder of his contract, and it is not known whether that applied here.
