Duje Caleta-Car has left Lyon on a free transfer to join Sassuolo after his contract was ended by mutual consent.

According to Get French Football News, the 29-year-old Croatian spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad and was not in Paulo Fonseca’s plans on his return.

Lyon had hoped to sell him this summer, but no deal emerged. The former Olympique de Marseille defender was among the top earners at OL, with a reported salary of €250,000 per month.

With a sale unavailable and the club keen to reduce their wage bill, both parties agreed to terminate the final year of his deal. He then moved to the Serie A side as a free agent.

Caleta-Car departs after 57 appearances for the Ligue 1 club.
