Eagles undone by quickfire goals

Eintracht slipped to a 3-0 home defeat against Atalanta BC, who decided the game with a flurry of goals around the hour-mark.

Eagles unchanged Dino Toppmöller sent out the same starting line-up against Atalanta BC as he did in the 4-3 Bundesliga win in Cologne at the weekend. There was a maiden appearance in a senior matchday squad for 18-year-old Marvin Dills, who signed his first professional contract in June.

Positive start

The Eagles showed plenty of running and attacking intent right from the start and were initially the more active side against a defensive Atalanta outfit. As such, it was Eintracht who created the early chances.

Good openings Jonny Burkardt’s long-range drive was deflected narrowly over in the ninth minute, and just 120 seconds later, Nnamdi Collins embarked on a wonderful run down the right as Toppmöller’s charges countered. His brilliant pass inside found Farès Chaibi, whose shot from 13 metres out was saved by Marco Carnesecchi. Robin Koch also had an opportunity with a close-range header from a corner that missed the target (15’).

Frankfurt ride their luck In the 35th minute, with Eintracht now too passive, Charles De Ketelaere found Ademola Lookman, who turned Collins and smashed the ball against the right-hand post.

Shortly afterwards, Ritsu Doan miscontrolled the ball inside his own penalty area and it bounced to Gianluca Scamacca, who was likewise thwarted by the right post, leaving the game poised at 0-0 at the interval.

Defensive blackout The complexion of the game changed on the hour-mark when Mario Götze lost possession, from which Atalanta launched a rapid counterattack that culminated in De Ketelaere crossing into the box from the right and the unmarked Lookman finishing from close range. That left Toppmöller’s side reeling, and they lost their defensive stability to the extent that they conceded two more goals in quick succession.

The Eagles were caught out by another counter in the 62nd minute, with Lookman threading the ball through to Ederson inside the penalty area, and he put the visitors 2-0 up. De Ketelaere made sure of the points three minutes later with Atalanta’s decisive third goal.

Eintracht subsequently struggled to find a way back into the game at Deutsche Bank Park as the experienced away side saw the result through to the final whistle.
