After the Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, FC Bayern’s defensive stability is the subject of intense debate, but sporting director Max Eberl sees no reason to question the fundamental idea of the game
In particular, the many goals conceded in recent weeks have reignited the debate surrounding Vincent Kompany’s style of play. Munich conceded a total of six goals in two games against PSG. In the Bundesliga too, the defence has not always looked solid of late
However, Max Eberl takes a differentiated view of this development. „I think that these last two or three weeks have been very special,“ explained the Bayern sporting director in an interview with Sky. The 52-year-old referred to the extraordinary pressure surrounding the decisive games of the season
„With these absolute highlight games, now with the Bundesliga, you’re German champions, for sure. You keep changing the team a bit because you also give all the players opportunities,“ said Eberl
That’s why he doesn’t want to look at the recent defensive problems in isolation: „Accordingly, I see it a little more differentiated.“

Despite the criticism of the balance between offense and defense, Eberl made it clear that Bayern do not want to give up their fundamental playing idea. „Sure, we conceded too many goals at the long end in the last game, but we also scored an extremely high number,“ emphasized the sporting director
The enormous attacking power in particular is a central component of the current Bayern team: „That’s just our game, that’s our DNA that we’ve developed.“
At the same time, Eberl conceded that certain adjustments were necessary following the PSG exit: „That’s perhaps why we were eliminated against PSG, but that’s another small adjustment that we have to make for the new season, so to speak.“
However, he added that they wanted to stick to their basic approach, as this attacking style of play was the reason why FC Bayern had set new standards in the Bundesliga
„But we also score 116 goals because of our style of play,“ explained Eberl, referring to Munich’s impressive attacking statistics.
