Eberl gives update: Upamecano also in danger of missing out against Augsburg

FC Bayern will in all likelihood have to do without Dayot Upamecano for the Bundesliga match at FC Augsburg. The central defender already missed the Champions League clash against Union Saint-Gilloise due to illness, and a quick return is not in sight

The personnel situation at the German record champions remains tense. After Alphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry were recently absent due to illness but are now available again, Dayot Upamecano is the next FCB professional to be affected. The French international had to miss the Champions League match against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise (2:0) at short notice and was therefore missing Vincent Kompany in the center of defense

After the win against the Belgian champions, sporting director Max Eberl commented on the central defender’s situation and dampened hopes of a speedy return. „I think that will be rather difficult. He’s already ailing,“ explained the 52-year-old when asked about Upamecano’s possible involvement in the upcoming Bundesliga away game at FC Augsburg. There are many indications that the 27-year-old will not be available on Saturday either

This is a further setback for Kompany, as Upamecano has been one of Munich’s most stable defensive players this season. Especially in a phase with a high playing workload and numerous English weeks, every absence weighs twice as much. All the more important was the performance of the remaining defenders against Saint-Gilloise, who kept a clean sheet despite being outnumbered

Kim and Tah likely to start again

Against the Belgians, Kompany relied on Minjae Kim and Jonathan Tah in central defence, although the South Korean experienced a bitter evening and was shown a yellow card in the second half. However, this suspension only applies in the Champions League, meaning that Kim is still eligible to play in the Bundesliga

All indications are that Kompany will once again rely on the duo of Kim and Tah in Augsburg. The two are therefore likely to form the center of defence again, provided there are no further changes to the personnel situation. Alternatives are rare at the moment, as the coach has had to rely on improvisation recently anyway – and not just in defence
