There have certainly been some developments at FC Bayern this summer: Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari were signed for a lot of money, which is also having an impact on other players. Alphonso Davies, for example.
The Canadian left-footed player could take on a different role in the new season. The Brown deal was by no means made to push Davies out of the team, but rather to increase FC Bayern’s options.
Especially since Davies has been dealing with numerous injury concerns recently. In particular, the torn ACL he suffered while playing for the national team sidelined him for a long time.
It’s interesting to note that FC Bayern apparently no longer views Davies solely as a left back. The flexibility of many players has been highlighted several times recently. In Kompany’s system in particular, it’s important for players to feel comfortable operating in multiple areas of the field.
During the match against RB Leipzig in the Telekom Cup, sporting director Max Eberl spoke about Bayern Munich’s new signings, but also about the resulting changes in player roles.

“They give the squad more versatility. Nathaniel Brown can play on the left side, but he can also play on the right. Even in the center. This also frees up Phonzy (Davies) to serve as a backup for Lucho (Diaz) at times. Hopefully, Phonzy will return to his former level of performance,” explained the sporting director.
Arijon Ibrahimovic was and remains part of the plan as a backup for Diaz. However, he hasn’t yet played at the very highest level during preseason. With his speed and dynamism, Davies can make an impact on the wing both defensively and offensively—and that’s exactly what FC Bayern is hoping for.
Especially when nearly all the players are fit, this roster is capable of being more versatile than ever before. And nearly everyone on the record champion’s roster could benefit from that.
