Match-winner Eddie Nketiah has praised Marc Guehi’s professionalism after the pair combined to help Crystal Palace defeat Liverpool 2-1.
Arne Slot’s side looked to have secured a point late on at Selhurst Park through Federico Chiesa’s 87th minute equaliser after Ismaila Sarr had put the Eagles ahead early in the first half on his return from injury.
But with practically the last kick of the game, late substitute Nketiah volleyed the ball in at the back post to send the home faithful into delirium, whilst ending Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season in the process.
Guehi was at the heart of the winner, with his flick on from the long throw falling to the feet of Nketiah. It only added to what was a professional and assured performance from a player who was so close to being part of the opposition had his deadline day transfer to Merseyside not collapsed.
Speaking after the match, Nketiah had nothing but praise for his captain.
“He’s top,” the 26-year-old said. “I think Marc’s qualities on the pitch speak for themselves, but off the pitch, he’s really important for the team. He’s a really good captain, a really good leader.
“We’re happy to have him here and happy that he’s here contributing. We’ve got no questions about Marc’s focus or determination. He proved that throughout his career. We’re happy to have him here and hopefully he can keep helping us this season.”
“Obviously, everyone’s got different personalities, so everyone shows in different ways. Everyone loves winning at this club. Every footballer, I’m sure, loves winning, so he’s no different. like I said, he’s great to have around.
“He’s a really good guy off the pitch. We’re happy to have him and, like I said, hopefully he can keep performing how he is at the moment.”
