Eder Mallo to referee Real Sociedad B v Castellón amid controversy

Eder Mallo Fernández has been appointed to take charge of Real Sociedad B v Castellón at Zubieta. The RFEF announced the appointment, with Del Cerro Grande, relegated this year from Primera División, on VAR.

Mallo’s name remains tied to the 2024 Gimnàstic-Málaga promotion play-off to Primera Federación. Málaga went up with a last-gasp extra-time goal, prompting an unprecedented reaction as Nàstic filed a complaint over key decisions and the match report. The case was later dismissed, but his display drew intense scrutiny.

More recently, he oversaw Zaragoza-Castellón last season. Pablo Hernández’s side thought they had led through Brignani, who headed in a Cala corner, but Mallo ruled it out for a prior foul by Diego Barri that only he detected. He also declined a potential red card for Dani Tasende, leaving Castellón exasperated.

Another contentious call arrived in the 24/25 opener against Eibar, when he disallowed a Douglas Aurelio strike for offside after a supposed touch by Jesús De Miguel, a decision reached after a lengthy review. Last year he also refereed the Córdoba game at Castalia, which ended 1-2.

Castellón now cross paths with Mallo again on Friday as they open the season away to Real Sociedad B.
