Ederson is set to join Manchester United for €50m including add-ons, a move that would be Atalanta’s fifth-largest sale. According to Football Italia, United stepped in after Atletico Madrid failed to meet the asking price.

Atletico had already agreed personal terms with the Brazilian several weeks ago, but did not match the €50m valuation. United matched the proposed wages and tabled €45m plus up to a further €5m in bonuses.

The fee would place Ederson above Alessandro Bastoni in the club’s outgoing deals, with Inter paying €40.7m in 2017. Atalanta had signed Ederson from Salernitana for €22.9m in the summer of 2022.

Atalanta have built a reputation for delivering results while turning significant profits on players. Their biggest sale was also to United, with Rasmus Hojlund departing for €79.8m in 2023.

Other headline exits include Mateo Retegui to Al-Qadsiah for €61.75m last summer, then the previous year Juventus paid €58.4m for Teun Koopmeiners. Cristian Romero was bought from Juventus for €19.3m and moved to Tottenham Hotspur for €53.8m in 2022.

Across each of the last five years, Atalanta have sold at least one player for €50m or more, funding fresh investment in their squad.
