The German Football Association has handed Edin Dzeko a two-match ban after his red card in Schalke 04s 2-2 draw with Hannover 96 at the weekend.
The striker was dismissed early in the second half when his foot caught Husseyn Chakroun in the stomach, with Schalke two goals ahead before being pegged back to a draw. According to Sky Germany, Schalke 04 plan to appeal the suspension.
Head coach Miron Muslic criticised the decision, describing the dismissal as extremely harsh and saying it had a brutal impact on the game. He maintained Chakroun was clearly struck but argued Dzeko had no intention to hurt his opponent, adding that when controlling a high ball with a turn, a player cannot see someone directly behind.
Dzeko, 40, will miss Saturdays top-of-the-table meeting with Darmstadt 98, and the first match after the international break, on the fifth of April, against Karlsruher SC.
Schalke had led by two before the red card and ultimately had to settle for a point.
