The German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed that Edin Dzeko will be suspended for two games following his red card in Schalke 04’s 2–2 draw against Hannover 96 over the weekend.

Dzeko was sent off early in the second half after his foot struck opponent Husseyn Chakroun in the stomach.

As a result, the 40-year-old striker will miss Schalke’s upcoming top-of-the-table clash against Darmstadt 98 on Saturday, as well as the game after the international break on April 5 against Karlsruher SC.

However, according to Sky Germany, Schalke 04 plan to appeal the suspension.

“Incredibly harsh”

Schalke were two goals up when Dzeko was sent off, but ultimately had to settle for a draw. Speaking in a post-match interview, head coach Miron Muslic criticised the decision.

"Of course, this incredibly harsh red card against us had a brutal impact on the game," Muslic said.

He added that while Chakroun was “clearly struck” by Dzeko, it was evident the striker had no intention of hurting his opponent.

"Anyone who has played football knows that if a ball comes over your head and you try to control it with a turn, you can’t see the opponent directly behind you," Muslic explained.
