Carles Martinez has confirmed Edmond Tapsoba as Bayer Leverkusen’s new captain for 2026/27, after he wore the armband throughout much of pre-season.

According to Get German Football News, the Burkina Faso international replaces Robert Andrich, whose future at the BayArena remains uncertain.

Tapsoba, 27, joined from Vitória Guimarães for about €20m in January 2020, swiftly became a mainstay, and has made 186 Bundesliga appearances amid major turnover on and off the pitch.

He extended his contract to 2031 in April, speaking then about taking greater responsibility, a commitment now reflected in the captaincy.

The centre-back delivered five goals and three assists last season, standing out during an otherwise disappointing Bundesliga campaign for Leverkusen.

He was a pillar of the unbeaten 2023/24 title-winning side and stayed as several team-mates moved on.

Martinez said this is the right moment for Tapsoba to lead, citing his longevity at the club and ability to connect with team-mates and fans. The coach added that Andrich had asked about his role and, for now, sits behind others in midfield.
