Eduardo Camavinga has rejoined France this autumn and, looking sharp, is pushing to become a trusted option for Zinedine Zidane.

According to Le Progres, the Real Madrid midfielder has been capped since September 2020 without nailing down a place under Didier Deschamps, saw his stock dip after the last Euro and missed the World Cup in the United States. He conceded the omission stung after a rapid rise, said he needed to bounce back, and believes his recall shows he is not finished.

At Real Madrid, joined in 2021, he has often been squeezed by fierce competition yet has lifted two Champions Leagues. Talk of a summer exit surfaced, but the 23-year-old chose to fight for a spot in Jose Mourinho’s double pivot, with uneven results. Learning alongside Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, he accepts consistency, concentration and fewer errors are required.

Able to operate as a holding midfielder or at left back, a role he would rather avoid now, he has so far been used by Zidane as a relay midfielder, his preferred position. Zidane was influential in his move to Madrid, though the pair had only met briefly at a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

Eager to reclaim standing in a period when places are up for grabs, he impressed with a convincing start in Belgium then a lively cameo at the Stade de France, where he went close to a third senior goal. He says he is content to do the dirty work if it helps the forwards and is ready for whatever task follows.
