Rio de Janeiro will observe a half-day from midday on Wednesday, 17 December, to ease city logistics as a football double-header looms.

According to PaponaColina, mayor Eduardo Paes announced the measure, which governor Cláudio Castro quickly endorsed, extending it to state and municipal staff across Rio.

The timing reflects two major fixtures, with Flamengo contesting the Intercontinental in the afternoon and Vasco da Gama facing Corinthians at 21:30 in São Paulo in the Copa do Brasil final first leg.

On social media, Paes, a Vasco fan, struck a light tone and urged supporters to enjoy the day with responsibility and respect.

Castro, a Flamengo supporter, framed it as a day for both clubs, afternoon for Flamengo and night for Vasco.

The decree detailing the change will be published in the Diário Oficial on Tuesday, 16 December, formalising the half-day so Vasco fans can prepare for the opening act of the final.
