Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town are awaiting a decision from the EFL on how the result of their abandoned clash will be determined
The EFL have provided an official update on the process to determine an outcome of Blackburn Rovers’ clash with Ipswich Town.
The fixture reached the 80th minute mark at Ewood Park last weekend when the referee opted to conclude the proceedings due to the heavy rain.
Valerien Ismael’s side were leading 1-0, while also holding a man advantage after Jacob Greaves was dismissed.
However, it remains unclear how a final result will be decided, with three main options currently on the table.
Blackburn could be awarded all three points, or it could be replayed in full from the start with the score reset to 0-0; continuing from the 80th minute also remains on the table.
The EFL have confirmed that a decision could be taken on the outcome of Blackburn’s clash with Ipswich as early as next week.
The league officials have claimed that a deadline of 4pm was given to both clubs for their representations and that an outcome will be discussed before the end of this week.
“Following the abandonment of the Sky Bet Championship fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town, the two Clubs were given a deadline of 4pm [Wednesday] to make any final representations to the League,” wrote the EFL, via their X communications account.
“Once in receipt of the submissions, the matter will be discussed by the EFL Board before the end of this week, with the outcome to be confirmed shortly thereafter.”
Ismael has made it clear that he believes that restarting the game from the very beginning would be unfair on his side, citing the man and goal advantage.
He believes the Lancashire outfit should be awarded all three points, although he remains open to the idea of getting back underway from the 80th minute as well.
It remains unclear what decision the EFL will make at this stage, with both sides now sitting with a game in hand on their rivals.
Blackburn and Ipswich are both on six points from their opening five games, and either club could move up to 11th in the table if they can seal all three points from this fixture.
The EFL have a tough decision to make, and the two clubs will just have to accept whatever outcome they arrive at.
If the game is replayed in full, which seems the likeliest option at this stage, then Blackburn will have to go and win the game again, which they are more than capable of.
It would be a lucky reprieve for Ipswich, and particularly Greaves if his red card is essentially rescinded in the process.
The torrential downpour did also impact the game while it was still being played, so taking that into account should be a consideration both clubs concede whenever the EFL’s decision is confirmed.
