Thomas Frank said he was ‘very proud’ of the players after finishing fourth in the UEFA Champions League league phase and booking a place in the Round of 16 after a convincing 2-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany on Wednesday evening.

We dominated from the first to last whistle, scored a disallowed goal inside two minutes and eventually came through thanks to goals from Randal Kolo Muani - back at his former club - on 47 minutes and Dominic Solanke on 77.

The shot count of 15-4 in our favour told the story with the Bundesliga side rarely threatening – Hugo Larsson clipped the crossbar at the end of the first half – and our 3-4-3 system working well. Cuti Romero was named UEFA’s Player of the Match and Xavi Simons was outstanding again roaming around the forward areas.

Eight games, five wins, just one defeat – at holders, PSG – and six clean sheets, it’s been quite a performance in the league phase of Europe's premier competition, not forgetting we went into this game without 14 senior players through injury and ineligibility.

We will now play one of four teams in the Round of 16 in March - Club Brugge, Galatasaray, Juventus or Atletico Madrid – with the second leg at home. We’ll know our opponents after the play-off round in February.

Speaking to us after a night to remember at Deutsche Bank Park, Thomas said: “I’m very proud of the team, and the club - to finish fourth in the group stage in the Champions League is a big achievement. Look how many clubs, big clubs, are not in top eight and we finished fourth, 17 points, six clean sheets. That's impressive. I think we need to praise the team and the boys.

“We had basically 12 available outfield players, senior players, for this game and for Borussia Dortmund (a 2-0 win in MD7 last week). A lot of players had to push through where they were not at the highest fitness level as they should be, they did that and the character and mentality was shown throughout.

“I think we were more or less in control throughout. I liked how we pressed high. I liked how when we had to defend low, we defended low, but I mainly liked how we controlled the game on the ball in big phases and created some very good opportunities - that's something we need to work on and get better.

“The 3-4-3 (system) has been good in the last few games, more or less. There are always things we want to do better, but I think on the ball today there were some good tweaks in the way to progress up there. Then we still need to play a little bit quicker at times on the sides.

“Also, praise to our fans, how they travelled in numbers and how they were singing throughout the game - so happy to be able to give them the win. Thanks for the support. Now we're in the Round of 16 and now it's recover well and then we need to be ready for Sunday.”

Manchester City are up next as we return to Premier League action at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (4.30pm UK).
