Spurs can tonight produce another reprieve from their miserable Premier League form by securing their place in the Champions League last-16 stage. Last week’s win over Borussia Dortmund meant they are guaranteed a place in next month’s two-legged play-offs, but another three points will see them head straight into the knockout stage proper.
And they could do with a boost. More dropped points at the weekend, at Burnley, also came with another serious injury as Pedro Porro has been ruled out for a month with a hamstring injury. Micky van de Ven is also missing out, meaning the back line will be significantly depleted, sitting behind a midfield which is also lacking numbers.
But Spurs can look to last season’s win in Frankfurt, on their way to Europa League success, as a good omen tonight, and will now that their hosts are also having a difficult time of it. Frankfurt have already been eliminated from the Champions League entirely, and have not won in six games.
