It may be a mere consolation for Newcastle against Manchester City, but Anthony Elanga has finally ended his wait for a goal.

The winger joined the Magpies from Nottingham Forest in the summer, having initially progressed through the youth ranks at Manchester United after joining them at the age of 15.

Newcastle found themselves three goals behind against City, and five down on aggregate, in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie.

Omar Marmoush and Tijjani Reijnders were on the scoresheet for the hosts, but Elanga was able to pull one back shortly after the hour mark.

He cut inside from the right flank and curled a delightful effort into the far corner, rounding off a solid solo effort.

The Swede had a golden opportunity to score his second minutes later, but failed to convert from a few yards out.
