Anthony Elanga left Mestalla on his own feet after a heavy challenge, and an initial assessment ruled out a serious injury, according to AS.

The Newcastle winger had been stretchered off after José Luis Gayà's right foot caught him on the shin. Newcastle labelled the tackle "horrible" on their live feed and feared the worst.

Valencia captain Gayà realised immediately, apologising on the pitch and later asking after Elanga in the dressing room. It had no place in a friendly.

Arnaut Danjuma, a friend of Elanga, visited Newcastle's dressing room at half-time.

Newcastle's medical staff examined Elanga during the interval and briefed reporters following the club. For a few moments the scene and his pain recalled Getafe's Uche, who has effectively said goodbye to the season after a friendly against Monaco.
