Guarani sacked head coach Matheus Costa on Wednesday 14 and named Elano, the club's technical coordinator, as interim. If no appointment is made by Sunday 18, Santos could face him at 20:30 at Brinco de Ouro da Princesa in the Paulistão third round.
According to Diario Do Peixe, Elano will lead training and stay on the touchline unless a permanent hire arrives. He has been at Guarani since May last year.
The campaign has begun with a draw against Primavera and defeat to Novorizontino. Hired late in Série C, Costa took the team to the latter stages but missed promotion, finishing with 13 matches, five wins, four draws and four defeats.
A Santos idol, Elano won Brazilian titles in 2002 and 2004 and the Libertadores in 2011. He also lifted the Paulista in 2011 and 2012, making 322 appearances and scoring 68 goals, before joining the coaching staff after retiring in 2016.
As assistant, he oversaw nine matches for five wins, one draw and three defeats. After Levir Culpi’s dismissal during the 2017 Libertadores quarter-finals against Barcelona-EQU, he led Santos to the end of the league season, finishing third.
As a head coach in 2020, he faced Santos with Internacional de Limeira at Vila Belmiro, losing 2-0 with both goals from Raniel. He later managed Figueirense, Náutico and Ferroviária, and worked as a pundit before Guarani’s approach.
