La Liga remains a top priority for FC Barcelona, and the next challenge for them in the competition arrives in the form of Elche. The opposition might not be flying high in the competition, but they will have their home supporters behind them as they face the Catalan giants.
Moreover, considering the fact that Barça have already dropped points recently against Real Sociedad, the Catalans will be fully determined to avoid a similar fate this time around.
Barcelona head into the weekend sitting at the summit of the La Liga table and fully aware of the responsibility that comes with that position. While Elche do not pose the same threat as some of the league’s top sides, this is the type of fixture that can quickly turn dangerous if concentration levels drop.
The good news for the Catalan side is that their recent form provides plenty of encouragement. Across their last five matches in all competitions, they have recorded four wins and just one defeat. Their attacking output has been particularly impressive, with 14 goals scored in their last five games.
Defensively, there have also been positives. Barcelona have conceded only five goals in those five matches and have managed to keep two clean sheets.
Elche arrive in very different circumstances. They currently sit 12th in the league and their recent form reflects a team struggling to find consistency. In their last five matches they have suffered three defeats alongside two draws which has prevented them from building any momentum.
Despite their difficulties Elche have still shown an ability to trouble opposition defenses. They have scored 7 goals across those five games and have found the net in every one of them. At the same time they have conceded 11 goals which highlights the defensive vulnerabilities Barcelona will aim to exploit.
From Barcelona’s perspective this is a match they are expected to win. The gap in quality and form is clear and anything less than three points would be seen as a disappointment. However playing away from home in La Liga always carries its risks and Flick’s men will need to remain focused disciplined and patient if they are to leave Elche with a crucial victory.
