Unai Emery says Joao Gomes could return for Aston Villa’s clash on Saturday, although his availability remains uncertain.
The midfielder missed Villa’s Carabao Cup win over Coventry and will be assessed over the coming days before a decision is made ahead of the game against Tottenham.
“He is needing some days to come back,” Emery said after Villa’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory..
“We are going to test him tomorrow and Friday. In case it goes well, he could be available for Saturday. It is uncertain for now.”
Emery was pleased with Villa’s progress in the competition and believes the victory, thanks to a brace from Tammy Abraham and goal from Ross Barkley, can help build confidence within his squad.
“We are now competing, trying to get into the direction our objectives,” he said.
“One of those objectives is to try to build a team, try to get comfortable and get confidence with the players joining us.
“Secondly, to try to compete for a trophy.”
Villa will face Bournemouth away in the next round, with Emery making clear that the Carabao Cup remains an important target.
“This is a way for a trophy; this is as well for Europe,” he added.
“So, winning this match, we are feeling confident and we’re going to compete in the next match in the next round against Bournemouth away.”
