Unai Emery has told Alejandro Garnacho to be patient at Aston Villa after watching a third successive match from the bench.

The Chelsea loanee was left out of the starting line-up for Wednesday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup win at Coventry, where Emery made seven changes from the weekend Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest. According to ExpressAndStar.com, he again remained unused.

The 22-year-old has only three substitute outings this season, and Emery said he must keep working in training, take any minutes well, and accept that others are ahead of him for now.

Ibrahim Mbaye was handed a full debut, while George Hemmings kept his place and created Tammy Abraham’s opener.

Further changes saw Johan Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson come on, and an enforced switch replaced injured goalkeeper Marco Bizot. Emery used his final substitution on Alysson, leaving Garnacho without action.

The head coach praised Hemmings, said Alysson understands the demands and added that Mbaye responded well. He explained Garnacho is a little behind after pre-season circumstances, so now is the time for patience.
