Emiliano Martinez has joined Chelsea from Aston Villa on a three-year contract, the move completed on Sunday.

According to Le Progres, the fee is about £7.5m, roughly €8.75m, with the Argentina goalkeeper, 33, leaving Villa after joining in 2020. He had three years left on his deal in Birmingham.

A 2022 World Cup winner and 2026 finalist, he returns to London where he began his senior career at Arsenal from 2012 to 2020, without ever becoming first choice.

Martinez said he would give his all in matches and training to make the club, his team-mates and supporters proud.

Chelsea add an experienced, strong character in a position that has been a long-standing weakness for them. He will compete with, and could replace, Robert Sanchez, who was criticised after the 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday.

Villa, meanwhile, lose another mainstay after Lucas Digne, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, though most exits have been covered numerically. They had anticipated his departure by signing Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, 24.

Martinez turns 34 on 2 September and is credited with around 300 appearances for Villa.
