Arsenal's big win over Real Madrid didn’t just boost Mikel Arteta’s side ahead of the second leg – it was also a massive result for English football as a whole.
The Gunners’ victory made sure the Premier League finishes in the top two of the UEFA rankings, meaning Premier League teams will get an extra Champions League spot for the 2025/26 season.
But there’s a bit more to it than that. In addition to the five English clubs already secured for next season’s Champions League, there could be two more. Here’s how it works:
If Aston Villa manages to win the Champions League but finishes outside the Premier League top five, and if Manchester United or Tottenham win the Europa League, both could get a spot in Europe’s top competition.
