England push Spain to the limit in 3-2 thriller as Anthony Gordon claims “no gap” between the sides | OneFootball

Anthony Gordon is confident England can compete with the very best after a narrow Nations League loss to world champions Spain.

Spain secured a 3-2 win at Wembley in the Nations League opener, in a chaotic clash that saw the lead change hands on three occasions.

The world champions led inside two minutes when Lamine Yamal capitalised on an error from Marc Guehi to open the scoring, but England fought back to lead at half-time. Gordon got the leveller after finishing off a lightning counter from the Three Lions, before Harry Kane headed home from Nico O'Reilly's cross, via a deflection.

Kane spurned the chance to extend England's lead when his penalty crashed off the woodwork, and Spain punished the hosts as goals from Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal turned the game around.

Spain extended their unbeaten run to 39 games in normal time and Gordon said England can take heart from pushing theWorld Cup winners all the way.

The Barcelona winger said he does not see 'a gap' between Thomas Tuchel's side and Spain.

"I don't think there is a gap [to Spain] I feel like we're right there," Gordon toldITV Sport.

"We can win that game so easily. If the penalty goes in we can go on and win the game. In hindsight it's always easy to say that. But I felt good in the game.

"I don't think there is a gap and I think if we played them in the final I would've felt confident. Being confident doesn't always translate into a win, but I think you've seen here tonight that we're a top team."
