Premier League
In England, the Premier League, the world's top football league, is facing a serious threat.
In recent hours, three of the leading English player agencies—CAA Base, CAA Stellar, and Key Sports Management—have threatened the Premier League with legal action. This comes as the league considers implementing a new salary cap, referred to as "anchoring" according to information from The Times. This mechanism would artificially limit clubs' spending on salaries, transfers, and agent fees, and could be a violation of competition law.
This cap would be in addition to the league's existing squad cost ratio and would restrict spending to five times the amount received by the club finishing last in prize money and TV revenue. Such a measure could harm the competitiveness of English clubs against Europe's elite and would be seen as an abuse of a dominant position. In response to these concerns, the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), the oldest players’ union, plans to meet with the captains of all 20 clubs to assess the potential impact of these rules. The agencies have demanded a complete withdrawal of the proposals and have threatened to launch their own legal action if the measures are adopted.
