Dominic West has made the controversial decision to change which club he supports

English actor Dominic West has revealed that he has stopped supporting Sheffield Wednesday in favour of Bristol City.

The 56-year-old is known for lead roles in The Wire, where he starred as detective Jimmy McNulty, in which he was in opposition to fellow British actor Idris Elba, and in The Crown, where he played Prince Charles.

He is from the Sheffield area, but has spent long periods of his career working in the United States and across the UK.

West has a number of upcoming projects, and has a quite busy career at the moment, meaning it’s unlikely he has much time to attend any matches.

The actor has opened up on his pride at coming from Yorkshire, but he lives in London when he is not working so that he can be closer to family.

He is also a BAFTA winner for his role in Appropriate Adult, winning the Best Actor award in 2011.

While on the red carpet for his upcoming series War, West revealed that he has lost his way from his roots in supporting Sheffield Wednesday, and that he is more of a fan of Bristol City these days.

He cited his son’s time in the Robins’ academy system as a major factor, claiming that he used to attend a lot of their games during that time.

“I started with Sheffield Wednesday,” said West, via Talksport on X.

“I have to say I’ve lost my way a bit.

“I’m a Bristol City fan because my son played in the academy, so I used to go.

“I’m hoping they’ll have him back, yeah, he’s a good player.”

West has 72 acting credits, per IMDb, with a career that began in earnest in 1995 with a role in Richard III.

He has appeared in major films and TV shows, such as A Christmas Carol, Chicago and Pixar’s Finding Dory.

The 56-year-old has also featured on the stage, performing at the Royal National Theatre, Donmar Warehouse, Royal Court Theatre and at the Crucible Theatre in his native Sheffield.

Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday’s fortunes this season

Bristol City have gone into the September international break sitting eighth in the Championship table, earning 13 points from their opening eight games.

The Robins reached the play-off semi-finals in 2025, but fell to 12th last season, so will be hoping to get back into promotion contention this year.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday suffered relegation to League One in 2025/26 following significant financial issues.

But the Owls are currently second in the table under Henrik Pedersen, with the team on 14 points from a possible 21.

Dominic West’s football fandom has waned with impressive acting career

It’s clear that football isn’t the most important thing to West, as changing allegiance is not something a lot of football fans would ever consider.

However, a family connection to Bristol City through his son at least makes this an understandable feeling.

West is quite a busy performer, and has a number of upcoming projects, including War, coming out in the next 12 months.

But it’s difficult to imagine him being remembered for any role better than for his performance as McNulty in HBO’s The Wire, which is one of the most highly acclaimed TV shows of the 21st Century.
