Eintracht twice led through goals from Ebnoutalib and Burkardt but were ultimately held to a 2-2 draw by SC Freiburg.

Head coach Adi Hütter reshuffled his pack in one position following last week’s 3-1 win against Mainz, with striker Younes Ebnoutalib starting in place of injured defender Jeremiaha Maluze. Ebnoutalib opens scoringThe visitors enjoyed more possession early on, albeit without creating much danger in the final third. Eintracht showed them how it was done, and took the lead with their first attack. 

A long ball forward from Lilian Brassier released Jonathan Burkardt into space down the left, and he played a low ball into the box for the onrushing Ritsu Doan. The Japanese attacker’s first touch took him past a defender before he squared for Ebnoutalib to tap in at the back post.  

Scherhant equalises, Burkardt replies The visitors pulled a goal back on the counter after 34 minutes when Robin Koch was unable to prevent Derry Scherhant dribbling into the box and firing a low shot from 12 metres past Noah Atubolu and into the bottom-right corner. 

Parity was short-lived, however, as the Eagles provided the perfect response 120 seconds later. The Freiburg defence struggled to deal with an Eintracht corner and eventually the ball fell kindly for Burkardt to poke in at the back post from three metres out. 

Shortly before the interval, Atubolu produced a fine save to tip a Scherhant free-kick onto the right-hand post and keep the Eagles in front at half-time.  

Setback after restartThat all changed early in the second half when Scherhant found space down the Freiburg left and crossed into the box, where the unmarked Yuito Suzuki volleyed in at the back post to make it 2-2 (48’).Chances at both ends Scherhant went close to adding to the scoreline with a long-range drive that only narrowly missed the target. At the opposite end of the pitch, Doan fizzed a long-distance effort on the turn that went within a whisker of the Freiburg goal (60’). 

Burkardt was later denied by Mio Backhaus (65’), while Can Uzun hit the outside of the left-hand post (66’) and then the side netting (69’) as Eintracht pushed for a winner. Ultimately, however, neither side could find a goal, as the 60,100 spectators at a sold-out Deutsche Bank Park witnessed a 2-2 draw.
