Enzo Barrenechea used the international break to visit Valencia and see his family, saying in an Instagram post that time with them was just what he needed.

The Argentine midfielder built a strong bond with the city while on loan at Mestalla, and part of his family stayed on in Valencia after that spell.

He spent one season on loan at Valencia, impressing as his performances grew through the campaign and earning admiration for his work-rate. A permanent deal was discussed, but Aston Villa’s asking price ruled the club out, and he moved to Benfica on another loan.

Since arriving in Portugal he has been an important figure, starting most games. Yet in Benfica’s Champions League tie against Real Madrid, Mourinho used him only briefly, five minutes in the second leg with the contest already settled.

His post drew hundreds of replies from Valencia supporters and messages from first-team players such as Javi Guerra.

At the end of the season he will return to England, after which Aston Villa will decide whether to keep him, arrange another loan or sell him.
