Enzo Fernandez urges Lionel Scaloni to remain Argentina manager | OneFootball

Enzo Fernandez has urged Lionel Scaloni to remain Argentina manager. He spoke after a 7-0 win over Burkina Faso at the Estadio Monumental, with the squad facing a looming post-Messi transition.

"It would be very important for us that Lionel [Scaloni] stays; he built all of this. We have to keep competing at the highest level," he told TyC Sports after the match.

"Now we have to process the fact that Leo is leaving and continue on the same path we've been on."

The Argentine Football Association has proposed an extension through the 2028 Copa America, with an option to 2030. Talks between president Claudio Tapia and Scaloni's representatives are ongoing, with any decision tied to the coach's motivation to lead a rebuild.

Cristian Romero's appointment as captain signals a refreshed leadership group. Argentina now prepare for a friendly against Benin, billed as Lionel Messi's official international farewell at the Estadio Monumental.

Once the international break concludes, Scaloni's decision on the proposal will determine the team's tactical continuity before his contract expires in December 2026.
