Two of the big names in the Eredivisie got back on track this week, with a Japanese striker leading the way after four goals in a single game. Read on for our review of the latest action in the Eredivisie.

Friday’s action: Seeing red in Rotterdam

Both Excelsior and Groningen were reduced to ten men in Rotterdam on Friday night, but it was the away side that came away with all three points. Thom van Bergen gave Groningen the lead, his fourth goal in the Eredivisie this season, before Stijn Middendorp was given a straight red card on 70 minutes. Marco Rente then evened things up when he got a second yellow just before the 90 minute mark, but his blushes were spared by Stije Resink’s penalty just a few minutes later.

Saturday’s action: Ueda magic and Ajax back on track

PSV continued to march on with another win and a clean sheet in the Eredivisie. Goals from Joey Veerman and Ricardo Pepi in the first half were enough for a 2-0 win away to SC Heerenveen. PSV have now scored an impressive 46 goals in just 15 games, with a league best defence seeing just 17 going the other way. Heerenveen have won only one of their previous five games in all competitions.

Ajax came back from an early scare away to Fortuna Sittard to win 3-1. Kaj Sierhuis continued his good form in the Eredivisie with an early goal for the hosts, only for two own goals to swing the game towards the away side. Syb van Ottele put through his own net to make it 1-1 before Ryan Fosso scored an own goal just a minute into the second half. Owen Wijndal made it 3-1 after just 52 minutes, with the task getting much harder for Fortuna Sittard when Justin Hubner was sent off a minute later. Ajax themselves were down to 10 men after an hour when Youri Baes got a second yellow, but they held on for a seventh win in the Eredivisie.

Heracles struck late to grab a draw at home to fellow strugglers Telstar. The mini revival for the side looked under threat when Milan Zonneveld gave Telstar the lead after 67 minutes. Ronald Koeman in the away sides goal made five saves but was unable to keep out a 93rd minute strike from Ivan Mesik. Heracles ended with an xG of 2.21 and will be frustrated not to have taken more than a point.

Ayase Ueda was the taste of Rotterdam on Saturday evening. The Japanese striker put four goals past PEC Zwolle to move onto 18 for the season in the Eredivisie. Casper Tengstedt and Quinten Timber also found the net to see Feyenoord rediscover some of that early season form. Koen Kostons did grab one back for PEC Zwolle to make the scoring a still unflattering 6-1.

Sunday’s action: Thrillers for AZ and NEC Nijmegen

Utrecht and Twente kicked off Sunday’s action in the Eredivisie with a 1-1 draw. Victor Jensen grabbed his fourth goal of the season early in the second half, but Utrecht were unable to hold on for seventh Eredivisie win of the season. Youngster Mats Rots grabbed his second goal of the season in the 82nd minute to earn a point for Twente.

AZ and Go Ahead Eagles played out an entertaining 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon. Melle Meulensteen put in a man of the match performance for the away side and had them ahead after just 10 minutes. However, AZ had turned things around by the break, with Troy Parrott equalising and poor Mats Deijl scoring an own goal. However, Meulensteen grabbed his second of the game and fifth of the season in the 80th minute to deny AZ a win which would have seen them move into third.

Instead, it was NEC Nijmegen who ended the weekend in third place. They played a five goal thriller away to Volendam. The scoring began just before half-time through Brandley Kuwas, whose penalty put Volendam ahead. Darko Nejasmic made it 1-1 almost immediately after the break, with Basar Onal making it 2-1 in the 74th minute. Volendam looked to have rescued a point late on through Mawouna Amevor, only for Kento Shiogai and Kodai Sano to combine for the formers sixth Eredivisie goal this season. NEC have now won four games on the bounce and face Telstar next weekend.

The final game of the weekend in the Eredivisie saw Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper Joel Drommel star in a 1-0 win at home against NAC Breda. Shunsuke Mito scored the only goal of the game, with VAR denying Teo Quintero just before half time. Drommel made eight saves on the night to deny struggling NAC, who are two points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table.
