Erik Pieters has returned to Stoke in an academy coaching role. The former West Bromwich Albion defender is back at one of his old clubs.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, he has joined the Potters’ professional development phase staff alongside fellow former Stoke player Danny Pugh. Pieters previously represented the club from 2013 to 2019.

His last regular football came with Albion during a period when spending was largely curtailed amid ownership uncertainty and financial strain. He was signed by Steve Bruce on a free in 2022, with the then boss later noting they were neighbours.

The 18-cap Netherlands international became a reliable and versatile option under Carlos Corberan. He made 61 appearances across two seasons, mostly starting in an unfamiliar centre-back role.

After Albion, Pieters had short spells at Luton and Derby. He did not play for the Hatters and made only a single minute for the Rams, against Stoke, at the end of the 2024/25 campaign. The retired left-back, who turns 38 next month, was unattached last season before moving into coaching.
