Former Burnley and Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst has left Ajax to join FC Twente. As a result, Weghorst, who was once loaned from Burnley to Manchester Untied, has reunited with former head coach Erik ten Hag, who is currently the Sporting Director at Twente. Weghorst, who is currently at the World Cup with the Netherlands, leaves Ajax after just two season in which he scored 20 goals in 65 games.
Twente will be the fifth Dutch team that Weghorst has played for. Prior to joining Burnley in 2022, Weghorst played for FC Emmen, Heracles and AZ Alkmaar. After an impressive 45 goals in 86 games for Alkmaar he left Dutch football for the Bundesliga and Wolfsburg, where he scored 70 goals in 144 games. In 2022 he joined Burnley but struggled to ever have an impact for the club. In 22 games across multiple years for Burnley, he only scored twice. He spent a lot of time during his period with Burnley out on loan, with the likes of Besiktas and Hoffenheim. In 2023 he spent a few months with ten Hag at Manchester Untied, scoring twice in 31 games.
Twente will be hoping that the former Ajax and Burnley forward will help them as they balance European football and domestic ambitions next season.
