Leeds-born Erling Haaland opened the scoring as Manchester City beat Galatasaray in the Champions League, then appeared to make a Leeds United gesture in his celebration.

According to yorkshireevenpost.co.uk, the celebration to the crowd appeared to resemble a Leeds salute, nearly 26 years on from the tragic events around United’s UEFA Cup tie with the Turkish side.

The City striker has made no secret of his support for the club his father Alf-Inge Haaland served for nearly three years.

After starting on the bench against Wolves last weekend, he returned to the line-up for Wednesday night’s Champions League tie at home and struck on 10 minutes with a deft chipped finish.

Leeds supporters Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were fatally stabbed in Istanbul the night before Leeds played Galatasaray in the UEFA Cup semi-final first leg in April 2000.

Footage of the goal and gesture circulated on social media, with many fans praising the Norwegian for what they perceived as a Leeds United act.
