Sheffield Wednesday will be without Ernie Weaver for a period of time due to a long-term injury issue.
As reported by journalist Andy Giddings, the 19-year-old will be absent for months after suffering an ankle problem.
It’s been claimed that surgery is needed, meaning Henrik Pedersen will have to do without the defender for the time being.
Reports earlier this month suggested that the youngster was attracting interest from Premier League clubs following his impressive performances in the Championship.
Weaver has made six appearances so far this season, breaking into the Sheffield Wednesday squad following a number of exits in the summer.
When asked if the injury to Weaver could prevent a January sale, FLW’s Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna claimed it’s a damning indictment of the club’s financial position that this can be seen as a silver lining.
He believes any sale in the winter would be at a cut rate price that would just help the Owls generate some funds to continue operating day to day, so it might be best that he will now likely stay.
“It is awful that we have to consider the viewpoint that there is some sort of blessing in Ernie Weaver’s injury because, realistically, that could stop Chansiri selling him in January,” McKenna told Football League World.
“That would be a disaster for the club because it would be a fire sale of the player, a rushed sale to get money to scrape by.
“So Ernie would be going for far less than he should.
“But, it does feel really bad thinking like that.”
McKenna has praised Weaver’s potential, and has criticised the injury as a result of over-playing him due to a lack of alternative options: “This is a young player who has shown fantastic potential, and has a really good career ahead of him, and I would really hate to think that he’s got a serious injury that may stop this career developing as it should.
“Because the injury has come about because he has been thrust into this situation due to a complete decimation of our club, and he has had to play through pain barriers due to the fact there’s no one else available.
“It’s awful to think of the silver lining but, as I say, it’s a silver lining grounded in reality, so I just wish Ernie the best and I hope he gets back as soon as possible and that the horrible situation at Sheffield Wednesday does not ruin a very, very talented young player.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s financial issues have caused them to have a difficult 2025, with the team now at serious risk of relegation to League One with a looming points deduction.
Sheffield Wednesday are in desperate need of a new owner, and the fact there can be any kind of silver lining to Weaver’s injury shows why.
This is a 19-year-old who has had to step up to the side in very difficult circumstances and has been a complete credit to himself and his talent.
He will now miss months of the season, which is a crucial blow to his development as a player, and could be a setback to his career.
But there’s no doubt that the Owls would’ve considered a sale in January to raise money to help pay players and keep the lights on, which would’ve been a bad move for the club in the long run.
