Born in a cobbler’s shop in 1905, Estudiantes forged a four-time Libertadores pedigree and now chase a fifth as they face Corinthians in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The tie kicks off at 21:30 Brasília time at the Jorge Luis Hirschi stadium in La Plata. According to Globo.com, Corinthians have arrived in the city ahead of the game.

La Plata’s carefully planned grid and universities shaped an intellectual identity, and two clubs defined its rivalry. Twenty founders created Estudiantes in a small shoe shop, and the name reflected their student roots.

Under Osvaldo Zubeldía they broke through in 1967 by winning the Torneo Metropolitano, the first champions outside River Plate, Boca Juniors, Racing, Independiente and San Lorenzo since 1931. A Libertadores treble followed from 1968 to 1970, plus the 1968 Intercontinental Cup against Manchester United.

Boca hold 35 league titles and River 38, while Estudiantes have seven, most recently in 2025. In the Libertadores, Boca have six, River four and Estudiantes four.

Juan Sebastián Verón returned in 2006 and inspired the Apertura win over Boca, the first league crown in 23 years. In 2009 they started in the preliminary round and played 16 matches to the title, beating Cruzeiro in Belo Horizonte.

That triumph bridged eras, echoing his father Juan Ramón’s role in Zubeldía’s side, and another Apertura followed in 2010 as Estudiantes stayed among Argentina’s leading contenders.
