Marcos Rojo, 36, has an agreement in principle to rejoin Estudiantes, who face Flamengo in the Libertadores semi-finals, according to Coluna Do Fla. The move is yet to be announced but could be confirmed in the coming hours.
The deal runs to December 2027 and would be his third spell with the club that developed him.
Medical tests, signing and immediate integration under Alexander ‘Cacique’ Medina are planned for the weekend.
The stand-off followed Racing’s 3-2 Copa Argentina quarter-final loss to Boca Juniors. Rojo informed president Diego Milito of his desire to return, the request was rejected and talks ended in friction.
Since Tuesday, 29, he has not reported for Racing training, and the club are weighing punishment. He sees the semi-final as a chance to repair ties with Estudiantes fans strained by his 2021 move to Boca.
Estudiantes need a centre-back because Tomás Palacios and Leandro González Pirez are suspended after third bookings. Midfielder Gabriel Neves has fractured a wrist and is expected to miss about three months.
Rojo would add experience, having played the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and finished runner-up in Brazil. He debuted for Estudiantes in 2008, won the 2009 Libertadores and 2010 Apertura, and returned on loan in 2020 but played once.
Conmebol allows up to three changes to the 50-man list, with a deadline of Friday, 9 October, which could clear him to face Flamengo in both legs. The first leg is on 15 October at 21:30 Brasília time at Estadio UNO, the return on 22 October at the Maracanã.
