Estudiantes ‘to pursue’ Marcos Rojo before Flamengo Libertadores semi-final | OneFootball

Flamengo and Estudiantes are preparing for the Copa Libertadores semi-final, and the Argentine club are targeting centre-back Marcos Rojo as they look to strengthen. Rojo was a World Cup runner-up with Argentina in 2014.

ESPN Argentina reports that Estudiantes are negotiating a compensation fee with Racing to rescind Rojo’s contract, which runs until December 2026.

An academy graduate, Rojo played for Estudiantes’ first team from 2009 to 2011, making 54 appearances with four goals and two assists.

If he signs, it would not be his first Libertadores semi-final against Flamengo. In 2025 the Racing defender started both legs. He scored the own goal at the Maracanã that gave Flamengo a 1-0 first-leg win, and was involved in the incident that led to Gonzalo Plata’s red card in the return after the Flamengo forward slapped him.

The ties are scheduled for 15 and 22 October, with the first leg at Estadio UNO in La Plata and the return at the Maracanã.

Flamengo finished the group stage with the best overall record, so they will play every knockout tie at home in the second leg up to the final. They are the reigning champions, having beaten Palmeiras 1-0 in 2025 under Filipe Luís with a Danilo goal, becoming the first Brazilian club to win the competition four times. They now chase back-to-back titles in 2026.
